Professor Rishad Shafik (SMIEEE, MIET) directs Newcastle Microsystems AI (MAI) Lab; he is also a Co-founder and CSO of Literal Labs. His research emphasises hardware/software co-design of machine learning systems, with a particular focus on ultra-low-energy design principled on neurologic algorithms. He has co-edited a book: “Energy-efficient Fault-Tolerant Systems" published by Springer USA, and has authored/co-authored over 230 research articles with several winning the best paper or poster awards. He is a Steering Member of the EPSRC-funded Microelectronics Network+ eFuturesv3, and a regular contributor to, and organiser of, major conferences. He leads/co-leads several research projects funded by EPSRC (UK), ERC, RC Norway and Industry, e.g. SONNETS programme, APRIL AI Hub, EPSRC Edge AI Hub and CareLearner UK-USA-Norway project. He graduated his PhD and MSc (with distinction) degrees from Southampton in 2010 and 2005, respectively, and a BSc in Electronic Engineering (with distinction) from IUT, Bangladesh, in 2001.
