Special Session

This Special Session will bring together researchers working across printed and flexible electronics, advanced materials, and micro/nano sensor technologies. It will provide a platform for sharing current fabrication approaches, materials and processing strategies, recent developments in electrochemical and environmental sensing, and opportunities to integrate these technologies into practical sensor systems for healthcare, environmental monitoring, industrial safety, smart infrastructure, and IoT applications.

This special session aligns strongly with the Sensors Applications Symposium by emphasizing the convergence of different sensing modalities into multimodal, application-driven sensing systems towards sustainability. The session will showcase advances in sensor technologies, system integration, instrumentation, signal processing, and data fusion. It aims to bridge the gap between emerging sensing principles and practical deployments while fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and promoting next-generation sensing solutions with enhanced sensitivity, selectivity, robustness, and real-time decision-making capabilities.

Emerging human-centric applications increasingly require sensing systems that operate continuously under tight constraints on power, computation, form factor, and communication. At the same time, real-world deployment introduces challenges in sensing robustness, environmental variation, generalization across users and environments, privacy, and system integration. Addressing these challenges requires joint advances across sensing hardware, signal processing, embedded intelligence, and machine learning.

This Special Session aims to bring together researchers working on intelligent acoustic sensing, acoustic/ultrasonic nondestructive evaluation, signal processing, sensing systems, and AI-enabled acoustic measurement, with particular emphasis on both methodological advances and emerging applications. The session intends to provide a multidisciplinary forum connecting researchers from instrumentation and measurement, structural health monitoring, nondestructive testing, artificial intelligence, agriculture, food engineering, and intelligent sensing.

The focus of the special session is related to measurement methodologies, both AI-based or not, direct or indirect, aimed at making non quantitative techniques able to perform quantification. Also, unconventional sensing measurement methods (e.g., augmented and virtual sensing) able to go beyond the main usage of sensors are welcome. Application fields can span from chemical sensing to biomedical, from environmental to industrial applications, and many other.
